User Service Unit
This unit is the section that interfaces with the public on a daily basis. The primary objective is to acquire, catalog, index and disseminate information. The unit manages the Research Room, which is fully air-conditioned, providing a comfortable atmosphere for public use.
Some of the services provided are:
• Photocopying
• Recording (cassette, compact disc and VHS/DVD – are dependent on the duration.)
• Scanning and
• Search services.
Kindly note that certain restrictions apply.
Brief information is provided through telephone and e-mail requests. Such inquires are entertained within limits.
Some of the collections are on various mediums such as microfilm, video, reels, etc. The unit has the necessary equipment to assist with accessing the information.
To facilitate the use of the collection, professional staff ensures that adequate and update finding aids are readily available. Computers are available with user-friendly programs to guide you in your search. Research Information Officers are always on hand to assist with queries as services to the public is of paramount importance.
The unit also embarks on outreach and publicity programmes through traveling exhibitions countrywide and in-house exhibits on subjects of particular interest.
The unit welcomes requests for tours from educational institution and other interested organizations. Small exhibitions may also be displayed on special topics provided adequate notice is given.
Information held by the Belize Archives is in most cases unique and irreplaceable. To ensure their survival for future generation, the following rules are to be adhered.
• Please note that the Archives reserves the right to refuse and withhold any document[s] which are not catalogued and or in fragile conditions.
• Eating and drinking are not allowed in the research room. Smoking is not allowed in any part of the building.
• Only pencils may be used when making notes. Ink should never be used when examining documents and depending on the condition of the records, gloves are required to be used which are provided by the department.• No marks of any kind should be made on the documents. A fine of up to $5,000 could be charged to you by a court law. (Belize Archives and Records Service Act No. 78 of 2004, section 20)
