The Belize Archives Department(BAD) came into existence in late 1965. The staff of the public library assisted in organizing and operating the Archives Unit, until it changed its name to the Belize Archive and Records Service(BARS) in September 2006.

Exhibitions are carried out through out the year according to national events and interest, such as the Baron Bliss exhibit, Hurricane exhibit, etc. Each of these are well prepared highlighting major points of the topic through photographs, literature, videos, etc.
The duration of an exhibition depends on the event and also on the demand of the public. Exhibitions are mounted countrywide when requested(certain requirements apply).

The type of collections that the BARS hosts are general information about Belize namely: legal and government information, photos and postcards, audiovisual materials, land leases and grant plans and fiats, government records and private collections.
